Scotch Oakburn College has gained a reputation as one of Australia’s finest schools. To uphold this status, the development of the Performing Arts Centre at the College needed to encompass each of the following Performing Arts curriculum activities:
- School Bands, including a String Orchestra, String Quartets, a Wind Quartet, a Flute Choir plus Jazz and Rock Bands
- Junior and Senior large and small scale drama and musical productions
- Dance – on its own or as part of drama and musical productions
- Auditorium, Classrooms, Practice Spaces and Recording Studio with facilities for teaching practice and presentation
- Assemblies, presentations to students, staff and the public.
The integral part of the Centre is the Horton Auditorium, which seats up to 600 people. This venue was equipped to be a “multi-purpose space”, as it is used for variety of functions during the school calendar. Lighting bars, luminaries, sound equipment and theatre curtains enable the Centre to be used for drama and musical productions. The projector and projection screen installed ensure the space can be used for school assemblies and presentations. The sprung floor allows for dance.
The Centre also includes a purpose-built music room, the Leigh Speedy Room, which is an acoustically-designed rehearsal room large enough for all school bands and orchestras to perform and rehearse in.
Five “one-to-one” instrument tuition rooms and two learning studios (ie classrooms) provide perfect spaces for the honing of musical skills. A rock studio and two recording studios linked by a recording room give students a taste of what it is to be a professional musician.
As a cornerstone of the Centre, the s p a c e art gallery was established in the foyer. This gives students the opportunity to display their own work, as well as gain an appreciation of the work of local, national and international artists.
The CCTV system installed ensures that the Centre is secure and constantly monitored.
On the 10th July 2003, Scotch Oakburn College opened its $1.7 million Performing Arts Centre. The Centre is now a hub for theatrical and cultural pursuits, for not only students, but also for the Launceston community.
