Background

The Tasports story begins in 2001, before the company came into being, when the major ports in Tasmania were four separate corporations. At this time, the ports in Hobart and Bell Bay required the installation of CCTV surveillance and monitoring systems to monitor port operations.

In 2002, port operations in Devonport required a similar solution and the port of Burnie followed in 2005.

The challenge

Due to the nature and location of the port sites, the following factors needed to be considered during system design:

  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions
  • High volume and volatile, industrial traffic
  • Maximum degree of coverage and recording library
  • High quality recording in extremely low light
  • Remote user access.

The solution

The CCTV solution uses various forms of transmission including fibre, network and wireless network technologies for transmission of video and data from camera to control room. Live local monitoring and remote access for users across the sites WAN was also established to access, monitor and control all cameras throughout the Tasmanian ports.

KWMC’s experienced technical engineers ensured that the equipment was robust and engineered to cope with the harsh environmental conditions.

The four port corporations were amalgamated on 1 January 2006 into the new entity, Tasmanian Ports Corporation Pty Ltd (Tasports). To achieve real synergies between the sites, the CCTV systems in each port were integrated, enabling them to “talk” to each other. This process was made simple through initial forethought and planning by KWMC.

In 2007, Tasports required an expansion of their existing Cardax access control system and requested KWMC as their preferred integrator. With Tasports being one of KWMC’s major clients, undertaking intensive Cardax training in order to complete the job was not a problem.

When Tasports became aware of KWMC’s expertise in AV equipment, they also contracted KWMC to complete an audio visual boardroom fit out. The cornerstone of this room was the videoconferencing system which simplified communication between the separate port locations.

The results

Given the nature of industrial wharfs, controlling access is a major aspect of port operations.  Much of the activity throughout the day involves entry to and exit from the site, mostly for logging activities, contractors and employees.  The integration of the CCTV and access control systems has ensured that the process of monitoring access has been simplified.

Tasports are now able to monitor and survey port operations so that they are highly secure and hazards are easily identified so that the ports remain safe for the many employees and visitors to the sites everyday.
